Roberts' Rules of Order is an entire book, and way too detailed for the average layman to be familiar with.  My recommendation would be to use a simplified version that covers the basics of what most meetings need.  The Resources page here on the MARA website has a chart on Rules of Procedure for Meetings.  Or you can go online and look for Simplified Robert's Rules.  Here's one good example, from Cornell University:
