Our Association has 55 members. We do NOT have an attorney on retainer. Attorneys are expensive. What we do instead is to follow the recommendations the attorneys at the annual MARA conference always give us: Read the laws very carefully and do exactly what they say. If you do everything exactly as required, it leaves little opportunity for anyone to find a cause against you. An opposing attorney will look for some flaw that they can attack, and if they can't find one, they are unlikely to be willing to take a case against you.
See 23 MRS sections 3101-3105-A. Here's a link. https://legislature.maine.gov/legis/statutes/23/title23sec3101.html
Use the arrow near the upper right corner of that page to scroll through the statutes that follow.
The attorneys also recommend going over your bylaws each year to make sure they agree with the laws and that you are actually following them, or if they need to be amended to reflect how you actually operate or to agree with amendments to the law.
We do have liability insurance.
