Tax ID number required?

We have one home that has been foreclosed upon and is now held by a bank or financial institution. The home is three years past due on association fees. The bank refuses to pay the dues unless we obtain a tax ID number. This sounds unusual to me and I see no place in any of the regulations (we are set up as a Statutory Road Association) where obtaining a tax ID number is a requirement. Can you point me in a direction here?

The bank probably needs to record to whom it is disbursing funds, and does that by tax ID number (EIN).  They are undoubtedly not accustomed to dealing with the gossamer legal entity which is a Maine Statutory Road Association.

It may just be easiest to get an EIN. It takes about 5 minutes, and doesn't cost anything.  Go here: https://www.apply-gov.us/tax-id/index.php

Looked at that site...filled out all the info...at the end they ask for my credit card to bill me from 150-250 dollars. Again my question...why does the association have to spend this money?

You are absolutely right -- it should not cost that. The site you went to is not a govt one though it purports to be. They charge for their "services." Try the IRS one,

    or specifically to apply online:

I did not go through the process but I think they will not charge that.

Looks like I picked the wrong link -- don't use that. There is no charge for an EIN, and you get it directly from IRS.
